What does a medical transcriptionist do?
Medical transcriptionists are medical language professionals who interpret and transcribe dictation by physicians and other healthcare professionals. This is either transcribed in written form or sent to a digital system.
Where do medical transcriptionists work?
Medical transcriptionists work at home, in a clinic, doctor’s office or hospital. Many MTs work in their homes as home based employees or independent contractors.
What equipment is required?
You need a standard computer, some type of word processing software, i.e. Word and transcription equipment, which is the same equipment you will use when you work as a transcriptionist.
Is the demand for transcriptionists good?
Demand for this profession far exceeds the supply of quality trained US transcriptionists nationwide! In addition, the number of individuals who have access to health insurance is expected to continue to increase because of federal health insurance reform. This will result in a growing number of medical tests and procedures, all of which requires transcription. Will you supply me with a job when I am finished?
We often hire the top graduates (U.S. based only) from our program (as the need arises); however, we certainly cannot guarantee this. Employment advice is provided with the course.
How much can I make as a medical transcsriptionist?
The amount of money you make will depend on the amount of work you do. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual wage for medical transcriptionists was $34,890 in May of 2015. Most transcriptionists in our company make between $20,000 to $50,000 per year. Salaries do vary by State and region, so check your local Labor Bureau. (www.bls.gov).
Why do you require five more books for the course?
These books that we recommend are not used only for the course, but as a reference library for you when you work. Except for the drug books, these books do not go out of date and will last you a number of years. You can purchase these books through us or on your own, but you need the Taber’s to start the course and all of them by the time you finish.
Do you need to be certified?
There is no legal certification for medical transcriptionists throughout the United States. However, formal education increases your chances of employment. We do give you a Certificate of Completion when you graduate.
